They needed a way to convince the actor to agree however, and so they asked one of the animators, Eric Goldberg, to animate a reel of the Genie performing some of Williams' old stand up. The film's directors, John Musker and Ron Clements, originally wrote the role of the Genie with Williams in mind.
Audiences were enthralled by the colorful story and original score, but many people best remember the movie thanks to Robin Williams' iconic portrayal of the magical, wish-granting Genie.
